GRADE 8
HABIT #5: Seek first to understand,
then to be understood
"Before I can walk in another's shoes, I must first remove my own." -Unknown
The key to communication and having power and influence can be summed up in one sentence: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. In other words, listen first, talk second. This is Habit 5, and it works. If you can learn this simple habit- to see things from another's point of view before sharing your own- a whole new world of understanding will be opened up to you. Have you ever read a social media message or received a text and weren't sure if it was serious or a joke? Do you give the sender the benefit of the doubt?
Technology and emails can sometimes be misunderstood because we can't see the other person. Receiving visual feedback in conversation helps communication. Our eyes help us to listen. Body language helps us understand the other person, and when it is our turn, to be understood. |

Lesson 27 - Appropriate Feedback
The first half of Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood is so important that we sometimes forget the second part "Then to be Understood." Seeking first to understand takes consideration, but seeking to be understood takes courage. Most people are not born good speakers; they must develop the skill over time.
